A government report released last week is recommending birth centers as a way to reduce maternal morbidity in the United States. Most significantly, the study found 26% fewer preterm births for women receiving midwifery care in freestanding birth centers when compared with traditional hospital-based care. This means that centers like Empowered Pregnancy are uniquely positioned to have an incredible impact on the health of mothers and babies in Washington State. Serving the women of Kirkland, Bellevue, Bothell, Redmond and Seattle, the Certified Nurse Midwives at Empowered Pregnancy are ready to help you and your family grow in a way that is healthy, compassionate and focused around you.
Also of note in the report is the positive impact group prenatal care has on pregnant women, particularly first time parents. This is why we are offering integrative prenatal care that includes group sessions, educational classes, individualized nutritional counseling and the postpartum support that women need. We are excited about this new report because it provides the data that we have seen anecdotally for decades — midwifery care leads to higher birth weights, fewer cesarean sections, higher rates of breastfeeding and greater client satisfaction. The evidence shows that women reflected on their birth experiences more positively if they felt heard, respected and involved in the process — this was ranked as more important to them than pain control.
For midwives, that is a sweet song to hear because it’s what we’ve been working toward for years and what we will continue to pursue for many more. We are excited to open in Kirkland in January 2019, where we will work to improve birth outcomes for women in surrounding communities. Feel free to find us on social media for updates @empoweredpreg.
